"The Plastic Polynesian Conversation"
Innovative Cultural Understandings
Cross-cultural identity or half cast culture is something in which I view as a real critical issue that New Zealand is currently facing. This is a topic that needs to be talked about and addressed, as we are going to become vastly more multicultural as we progress and move forward as a nation. Our people not knowing one’s self and youth having a disconnect to pride in themselves is something that cultural awareness and understanding can aim to strengthen.I explore identity conversations but especially enjoy explaining how our Pasifika and Māori youth particularly can weave in between various roles, responsibilities and cultural realms.
The topic of bi-culturalism and cultural representation is evolving and ever-changing. Young people are constantly forming their own sub-cultures in which they find comfort through a new sense of cultural understanding and connections. I talk about how a connection to one’s self and to each other is vital for success and achievement, especially for our young people and our future communities. I address the term “Plastic Islander” and try to change the way that it is used and directed at people, into something innovative and positive. I bring forward the plastic poly conversation.

About Me
Mālō e lelei, kia ora and hello, my name is Joshua Peauafi. I am of Tongan and New Zealand heritage. I am proud to be the son of Moses and Jillian Peauafi, little brother to Nick, Melissa, Moses Jnr and Selina. I am blessed and honoured to be married to Nicky Peauafi, my wonderful and loving wife.
I have a great passion for Pasifika people and culture, with a specific focus for Pasifika and Māori youth in Aotearoa New Zealand. I look at what identity means and how it effects the next generation within our communities. I am passionate about constantly learning and pushing to further my own education, but also role model that learning is a never-ending process and is not something that conforms to a classroom setting.
I am an avid believer that youth need people outside of their family circle that they can look up to and connect with. I am able to build relationships and gain a real reciprocal understandings with various diverse communities.
